Animation is the better choice when the thing you are explaining is hard to film: software, a process inside a machine, or an idea that only exists on a whiteboard. If your story is about people, places or a physical product you can point a camera at, live action is usually faster and cheaper.
A recent example is our 2D animated explainer for Sea-Flux. Sea-Flux is a cloud-based platform for fleet and vessel management, covering safety checks, maintenance, crew logs and compliance. It is a powerful tool but hard to explain quickly, so animation let us show how the platform works without screens full of menus.
