When MGI Tech approached us in December 2024, they had a clear goal: to bring their partnership with Lincoln University to life through a compelling case study video. The project aimed to showcase how genomics technology is changing the future of viticulture in New Zealand. Our team was tasked with capturing the science, the people, and the real-world agricultural impact of their work.
MGI Tech needed a documentary-style case study video that would highlight how their sequencing platform is helping researchers reduce pesticide use and breed more resilient grapevines and hops. We were brought on to film in two locations across the South Island of New Zealand: Lincoln University in Canterbury and several agricultural sites in Central Otago.
This was a three-day shoot with a lean two-person crew, balancing agility with quality production value. On Day One, we filmed at Lincoln University with Associate Professor Christopher Winefield. This included an in-depth interview, shots of the research lab and the DNBSEQ-G400 sequencer in action, and fieldwork in the university’s experimental vineyards.
From there, we travelled to Otago to meet with a viticulturist managing large-scale wine and hop growing operations. We captured interviews and b-roll that illustrated how data from MGI’s sequencing is being used to shift away from chemical reliance in favour of precision agriculture.
In post, we crafted a three-minute case study video that distils a complex scientific project into an engaging, accessible format. The final video now lives on MGI’s website and is being used for LinkedIn outreach to showcase how their technology supports sustainable agriculture in New Zealand.
This video supports a broader initiative from MGI and Lincoln University that’s tackling major environmental challenges in viticulture. New Zealand’s wine industry, valued at over $2.1 billion, faces growing pressure to cut chemical use due to sustainability concerns and consumer demand. Genomic testing is helping researchers identify natural resistance traits in grapevines and hops. With MGI’s high-throughput sequencing, they’re now able to process up to 50,000 samples a year.
That scale is helping scientists and farmers move toward targeted, data-driven vineyard management that is both cost-effective and environmentally responsible. The story we helped tell isn’t just about science, it’s about the future of farming.
If you’re looking for video production in Auckland or need to capture high-impact stories across the South Island, we specialise in producing case study videos that translate complex ideas into clear, powerful content. Whether it’s agricultural innovation, technology partnerships or university research, we know how to film in the field, in the lab and everything in between.
We work with small and large teams, shoot across New Zealand, and handle everything from pre-production and logistics through to final edit. Get in touch if you want to bring your case study to life through video.
